Living Green Starts at the Grocery Store!

Most people visit their local grocery store several times a month. If you're one of them, it's important to realize that what you buy there can have many significant ramifications for the health of the planet. These days, living a green lifestyle should involve more than just recycling the occasional newspaper or doing a little car-pooling; dramatic, long-term changes are needed. Since you spend a significant amount of time and money on store-bought items, making greener choices at your local grocery store can have a very positive impact on living an eco-friendly lifestyle. Look below for a handful of inspiring examples about living green at the grocery store.

Buy Organic Whenever Possible - With every dollar you spend, you are casting a vote. When you buy food that has been mass-produced on assembly lines using high levels of fertilizers, hormones and other chemicals, you're supporting those practices. You can cast your vote in a different way by sticking with organic products whenever possible. Sure, organic food generally costs more; it also tastes better and is a whole lot healthier. If enough consumers "cast their votes" for organic food, more and more of it will be made available - and that's great news for the health of the planet!

Choose Locally-Grown Produce - Sure, being able to enjoy fresh corn in the dead of winter is convenient. It's not quite the same as farm-fresh, locally-grown corn, though. There are dozens of great reasons to choose local produce over produce that's been shipped in from elsewhere; over at a wonderful rural photographer site, kathleenconnally.com, energy conservation, nutrition and community are all highlighted as top reasons to buy locally-grown foods. By sticking with local produce, you can rediscover the joy of munching on a freshly-picked peach or a plump, juicy tomato - all while living a greener lifestyle.

Stick to the Periphery of the Store - It's easier to make green grocery-buying choices when you have a game plan. Most of the time, highly-processed foods are found in the central aisles of a store; whole foods, including produce, meats and dairy items, are often found around its periphery. If you do venture into the central part of a grocery store, choose organic and fair-trade products; that way, you'll still contribute to the health of the planet.

Take it Home in Reusable Bags - The drawbacks of plastic bags are well-documented; several of their most worrisome characteristics are outlined at this research site. Recycling only goes so far; avoiding plastic bags altogether is a more practical idea. Invest in some reusable grocery bags and bring your Earth-friendly goods home in them. If enough people do so, some truly exciting changes could develop for Mother Earth.

The advice outlined above may seem inconsequential on the outset. If you put it to work every time you visit your local grocery store, though, it can have a profound impact on the health of the planet. Living green is all about making lasting changes to the way we do things, and the grocery store is a great place to start!
