Susan G. Komen Partnership with KFC

ThebeListᵀᴹ Challenges Susan G. Komen's Partnership with KFC. ThebeList challenges Susan G. Komen for their decision to partner with KFC in the “Buckets for a Cure” campaign. KFC is raising money to find a cure for one illness (breast cancer) while selling food that can lead to many other illnesses.

TAMPA, Fla.--(May 26, 2010)-- thebeList, a healthy living Web-based company that provides recipes, exercise and weight loss tips to women of all ages, is standing up to speak out against the partnership formed by Susan G. Komen and KFC.

“This partnership is a complete conflict of interest,” said Jen Nader, product manager at thebeList. “I am outraged that an organization like Susan G. Komen would align with a company that profits on feeding America unhealthy food and contributes directly to the obesity epidemic and a variety of other health problems, including cancer.”

In early April, KFC announced that participating KFC franchise locations would be selling specially-designed pink buckets of grilled and Original Recipe chicken and  KFC would donate 50 cents for every bucket of chicken sold during their “Buckets for a Cure” campaign. Set to run through May 30, 2010, this campaign has a goal of raising $8 million for the Susan G Komen foundation. ThebeList team, as well as many other individuals and organizations that have come forward publicly, believes that this campaign is misguiding Americans. Because the fat content, sodium and calories that can be found in a bucket of KFC chicken, this food can contribute to illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, heart problems and even cancer. The position of thebeList is that it is hypocritical that an organization focused on finding a cure to an illness would partner with a company that produces a product that leads to so many illnesses.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says that a woman's chances of getting cancer are about one in eight, but that eating right, maintaining an active lifestyle, and not smoking can reduce the risk immensely. Doctors think that a link between cancer and weight exists since many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced by fat tissue. thebeList would like to alert Americans that eating deep fried, calorie dense food from fast-food chains, such as KFC, is not a good diet for a women looking to prevent cancer. It is better to instead donate your money directly to cancer research and skip that order of KFC chicken. “While we appreciate the Susan G Komen foundation for their amazing contributions to finding a cure for breast cancer, we can't help but feel as though they have crossed the line with this recent partnership with KFC,” said Carol Tufts, CEO of thebeList. “We hope that they will listen to the critics of this campaign and think twice before partnering with companies that do not promote a healthy lifestyle in the future.”
